I guess the peeve is not so much with them as with the educational system as a whole, which let this sad pseudo-homonym happen so tragically (and often!).

Ugh! I HATE that! I see it all the time when I’m grading papers – along with “would of.”
That is one of my biggest ones EVER!!! I know it sounds like the contraction of ‘could have’, but come ON people! Read and realize!
