Maria Helena Carey
I was born in Bogotá, Colombia and grew up in California. I was a military spouse in Hawaii and sort of fell into the crazy circus that is Washington, D.C. by accident– partly because aforementioned ex-spouse. However, I believe I was unconsciously drawn to the city after reading a 2004 John Kelly column about John Phillip Sousa that painted a vibrant picture of the city not as a den of politics and smarm, but as a vibrant and colorful place where to belong. A city full of artists and connections, where wonderful things happen– like the hottest dance hit of 1889 bearing the same name as the main local newspaper. You can find that column by clicking here. As it turns out, wonderful things have happened here. I have found both a written and a visual voice, thanks to my Master’s in New Media Photojournalism from the Corcoran School of Art and Design (now part of the Columbia School of the Arts at George Washington University).My gratitude also goes out to my home: Capitol Hill. Through this neighborhood with its neatly arranged Queen Annes, Federals, Italianates and Wardmans, I have found a voice, inspiration, and friendship.
